MEET THE ARTIST
I first dabbled with a set of oil paints which had been gifted to me at the tender age of 8 or so. I can still recall the pot of imaginary yellow flowers I decided upon as a subject, the piece of scrap plywood I used as a substrate, and the distinctive oily smell, which meant being banished from the house and sitting in the garage to create my masterpiece…
I never imagined that after gaining my BA (Hons) Degree in Illustration from the University of Kingston in 1999 and enjoying a 20 year career spanning children’s books to editorial illustration, I would pick up my brushes again and rediscover my love for paint.
Quite apart from the sheer satisfaction of applying paint, exporing the way that certain colour combinations and uninhibited brushstrokes make me feel, uplifting my mood and giving me a sense of pure freedom, chasing that experience of joyful exuberance is the entire reason my work comes into existence.
I like to work on landscape paintings alongside abstract and floral pieces. It means that landscapes can suddenly form organically from abstract marks, taking me quite by surprise, which leads to an ever-present sense of discovery and excitement in the finished work.
Most days you’ll find me in my garden studio (nicknamed “the shed”!) at the home I share with my 14 year old son and our Dachshund Jarvis on the outskirts of the quiet rural town of Newark on Trent in Nottinghamshire.
Studio visits are welcome by appointment!
